I think in this photo, the way the photographer cropped the picture makes it so that your eyes are drawn to the child's face. The photo was framed by the run-down door frame to the right and evened out by the army solider with his gun. I think the photographer cut out of the shot the rest of the solider's face to stress the importance of the child and also the gun next to him.
